Susan Walker Obituary

Susan A. Walker, the second daughter of the late Virginia and Matthew Dukes was born on August 2, 1953 in Columbus, Ohio. She was raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she was known for her wit and sharp intellect. A student at both Masterman and a graduate of the class of 1971 Murrell Dobbins Technical High School, Susan was a brilliant student and always the life of the party. Susan has a younger brother, Syd and an older sister, Morriscene (who preceded her in death), who she loved and would protect fiercely.

After attending Clark College in Atlanta, Susan returned home to Philadelphia, where she worked as a legal and medical secretary before her curiosity for technology led her back to Community College of Philadelphia in the late 1970s and early 1980s. There, she studied computer programming and learned languages such as COBOL and Pascal, working with punch cards during the early days of computing. This experience helped her transition into more technical roles, where she thrived. Her passion for politics also inspired her to become deeply involved in local campaigns and to serve faithfully at the polls. She especially loved working alongside young activists, whose energy and commitment to positive change she admired. They affectionately nicknamed her “Gmomma Obama,” a title she embraced and wore with great pride. Susan also had a lifelong love of animals, especially dogs, whose unconditional affection brought her joy and comfort. Malik, in particular, held a special place in her heart and remained her pride and joy.

Susan had one child, Angela, whom she adored with her whole heart. Angela followed in her mother’s footsteps as a gifted student. Susan’s pride in her daughter was evident to everyone who knew her and took great pride in watching her grow into the woman she is today.

Susan was blessed with two handsome grandsons, Steven and Christian, whom she loved beyond measure. They brought joy, laughter, and constant activity into her life, and she cherished every moment with them. She was endlessly proud of Christian’s talent and passion for dance, never missing a chance to share his performances or celebrate seeing him on television. Steven was her steady companion and right hand, always there to help with errands, share deep conversations, and care for her with unwavering devotion. Her grandsons were a source of immense pride and enjoyment, and her love for them was undeniable.

On Tuesday, November 18, 2025, God called Susan home. She leaves to cherish her memories: daughter, Angela and her husband, Darryl Andrews; two grandsons, Steve and Christian; brother, Syd Dukes; and nephew, Terrance Young Sr. She also leaves a host of family and many special friends. She will truly be missed.
