Ruby Felder Obituary

Ruby Mae Felder was born in Gordon, Georgia on a Saturday. The date was September 16, 1944.  Ruby was the only daughter of the late Luther and Nettie Mae Murray. She was the eldest of six children. Two brothers, Freddie and Robert preceded her in death.

Ruby was educated at Lucy Laney High School in Augusta, Georgia. She excelled in bookkeeping and developed a great talent as an exceptional typist. It was here that she met her love Calvin Felder. The two married right after Ruby’s graduation in 1963. From this union of 41 years came two beautiful daughters, Donna and Sandi.

Ruby was always a very adventurous young lady. It was no wonder that right after high school she set her sights on the big city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Although she lived in Philadelphia most of her life, she always considered Georgia home.

Ruby worked in many industries and occupations. Some she liked and some she disliked, but putting food on her family’s table was the goal so she persevered until she found her niche.  With that pretty smile on her face, Ruby put her skill with numbers and bookkeeping to work in her most prevalent career as a Pensions Claims Processor at Prudential Insurance Company. Ruby provided dedicated service to Prudential for almost 30 years. Processing claims is where she thrived. She took great pride in her responsibility to accurately calculate the large checks of pensioners.

Ruby loved numbers and was excellent at budgeting. She knew how to stretch a dollar. At an incredibly early age, 4 or 5, Ruby would collect pop bottles for $0.05 per bottle. Little Ruby added up those pop bottles, sat on the steps and waited for the variety store to open so she could buy butter pecan ice cream-EVERY day. Ruby welcomed the challenge of getting the most for her money. This is a trait she passed on to her daughters.

Ruby was not one to care too much about what others thought.  She was immensely proud of the way she navigated life, modestly taking care of her family who never wanted for anything. Ruby loved music, reading romance novels and traveling. She loved her ‘stories’…” The Young and the Restless” especially. Another enjoyment of Ruby’s was movie watching. Her favorite movies were “Steel Magnolias” and “The Color Purple”. She also loved experiencing every new restaurant in town with her children and grandchildren, who affectionately called her PooPoo.

Ruby made a way, always putting her family first and walked to the beat of her own drum. Her friends were like her extended family. Back in the day she loved to pass time gathering with friends playing games like Po-Ke-No on the weekends. In her later years she enjoyed the solitude of playing solitaire and other games on her computer—but all of her life her hobby was shopping! She went from walking the malls for hours to shopping online at stores like Amazon, HSN and QVC!

In 1980, she joined Philippian Baptist Church under Reverend S. Amos Brackeen and later, after witnessing Pastor James S. Hall Jr., she joined The Triumph Baptist Church until her health kept her from attending.

Our beloved mother Ruby transitioned from this earthly life and entered into eternal rest on Thursday, November 30, 2023. She leaves to treasure her memory: two daughters, Donna Lorraine and Cassandra Renee; three grandchildren, Cahlin (Delores), Ciondra, Zakir; four great-grandchildren, Cahlin Jr., NaMora, Cali, Chancellor and a bonus grand baby, Caybren; three brothers, Charles (Barbara), Johnnie (Andrea) and Christopher (Pam); along with a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends including close friends Jacqueline Lightfoot, Dolores Cameron, and Gladys Shannon.
