Rogers was born on November 15, 1929 in Halifax County, Virginia, to the late Henry H. Powell and Henrietta (Logan) Powell. He was one of six children from this union.
Rogers attended school in Halifax. Rogers parents and family were farmers. Knowing farming was not for him, Rogers left and spent time in New York and Maryland. Returning to Halifax after experiencing the big cities, he dated and married Frances Lee Crews. Three children were born from this union, Frances Louise, Alice Loretta (preceded in death) and Alvin Pierce.
Looking for better opportunities, Rogers packed his wife and two small daughters up and moved to Philadelphia.
Rogers was a dedicated dependable and conscienous employee. He started at George A. Snyder Paper Box. Co. There he realized this was not economically good for him and family. Rogers studied to obtain better employment. Through those efforts, he obtained employment with two state agencies and one city site, all with an 8th grade education. Rogers retired from his city position as an auto mechanic for police vehicles.
Rogers and Frances studied to strive for a better quality of life. They wanted the family to do the same and they did just that. Rogers lived a frugal but comfortable life.
On Friday, November 6, 2020, God called Rogers home. He is survived by his two children, Frances and Alvin; our cousins/sisters, Lorleta and Broshea, five grandchildren, Darrys, Everette (TJ), Denaire, Darron and Erin; eight great-grandchildren, Everette (EJ), Tia, Jasaire, Jakai, DeVonne, Yani, Ryan, and Calvin, Jr.; two siblings: sister, Ruby (Powell) Hendricks of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and brother, Earl (Inez) of Halifax County, Virginia; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
