The Obituary
Henry Edward Strickland was the ninth child born to Paul and Pinnie Cook Strickland in Marietta, Georgia.
The family moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Henry was educated in the Philadelphia school system and graduated from Northeast High School. Upon graduation he enlisted in the United States Armed Forces, where he served several terms before being honorably discharged. Following his discharge, he gained employment with Procter and Gamble corporation, where he remained employed until he retired after many years of service.
Henry married Barbara Thomas, who preceded him in death. He was a devoted husband and caregiver during her illness. While Henry and Barbara had no biological children, they had a goddaughter, and were parental figures to many nieces and nephews.
Henry was considered the family spokesperson, and the designated “go-to” person on family affairs. He was often called upon to assist with family matters, including the care and financial support of his mother.
Henry accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and savior and was baptized as a child. In adulthood, he joined the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Philadelphia, where he served in numerous capacities for many years.
Henry was a lifetime member of the Herbert E. Miller Masonic Lodge #151, free and accepted Masons. He was also a member of the Medary Avenue Block Club for many years. Henry cherished his family, and enjoyed spending time with them. He will be remembered by his family for his witty and dry sense of humor.
On Saturday, February 18, 2023, God in His infinite wisdom called Henry home. He leaves a legacy of love and cherished memories to: his sister, Zephree Pugh of Chicago; sister-in-law, Evelyn Young; Goddaughter, Ashley Garrick; devoted neighbor, Ruth Johnson; close friend, Betty Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many loving relatives and friends.
