Gwendolyn Julie Gaines Henderson of Clementon, New Jersey, was called home at the age of 92 on November 23, 2023, Thanksgiving Day at Laurel Manor in Stratford, New Jersey. Gwendolyn passed surrounded by the love of those both living and departed. She was called home on this day because she wanted to be with all her daughters who we know gathered to welcome her with many of her heavenly family.
Gwendolyn was born April 30, 1931 in Richmond, Virginia. Where her mother and father raised all their children to be precocious and adventurous because it would take more during those times to achieve their dreams. She was the first child of Mildred Scott Gaines and Shirley Dewitt Gaines. She had a younger sister Jean Gaines Pearman and a younger brother Junie Gaines who preceded her in death.
After her mother moved back to Pennsylvania, Gwen spent a great portion of her life in the Philadelphia and New Jersey areas near family and friends. She attended Cheyney State University where she studied speech pathology and graduated in 1950. She also joined Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and was committed to serving the community at large. As a trailblazer in her field, Gwen later attended the University of Pennsylvania and obtained a master’s degree in education. She was dedicated to a career long into her 80’s supporting speech pathology.
Gwen was very successful in real estate and purchased homes in various areas such as New Jersey and Arizona. Her tenacity and quick-witted personality brought all around her laughing and kept many coming back to check on her as she aged.
Gwendolyn married John Phillip Henderson and they had three children: the twins, Laurie Gaye Henderson and Lita Anne Smith and the youngest, Terri Leigh Pierce.
Sadly, all her immediate family has preceded her in death, including her parents, siblings, and daughters, Laurie Gaye Henderson, Lita Anne Smith and Terri Leigh Pierce. Now they all welcome her with open arms to path that had been clearly laid even before she knew she was ready to take that journey we all must walk. Now she enjoys everlasting peace with them.
