The Obituary
Freda K. Hellams was born on October 20, 1954 In Union, South Carolina. She was the daughter of Luvenia Hellams and the late William Hellams.
Freda was raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she received her formal education in the Philadelphia public school system, attending George Washington Carver, Strawberry Mansion High School and Simon Gratz High School, where she graduated with honors. As a young child she had many hobbies, including reading, dancing, and playing the violin.
In later years, Freda was a driven and hard-working employee, whose work ethic was unmatched. She was employed with the federal government in several capacities, including working for the IRS, Social Security Administration, and the Veteran’s Administration, where she retired after several years. During her tenure she received multiple awards and designations for her expertise.
In later years, Freda expanded her hobbies to include extensive travelling and shopping, which always included her color-coordinated outfits and gadgets, and almost anything the younger children in her life needed.
Freda lived up to her childhood nickname “Sugar”, as she was sweet, compassionate, and genuine to all who knew her. She had an uncanny ability to reach people in a deep and positive way. Her love for family – especially her grandchildren – will be substantially missed.
On Sunday, July 16, 2023 God in His infinite wisdom called Freda home, where she joins those who preceded in death including her father Willam Hellams Sr., siblings Sam Hellams, William Hellams Jr., Leonis Hellams, Naomi Howard, Mae Young and Tommy Peeples.
She leaves a legacy of love and cherished memories to: her mother, Lavenia Hellams, her children, Cardell “Punchy” Hellams and Lakyth “Bola” Hardy (Eden); her life companion George Hamilton; her grandchildren, Jada, Jalen, and Leah; her siblings, Demetrius Hellams (Valerie), Kim Hellams-Page (Larry), Yvone Hellams, Joseph Peeples (Patricia), and Charlene Hayes (Don).
