Evelyn Douglass Obituary

Evelyn Virginia Douglass was born on January 20, 1926, in Amissville, Virginia. She was one of nine children born to the late Eugene and Bessie Parker. Evelyn had eight siblings who preceded he in death, Nancy, Mary, James, Bill, Eugene, Walter, Lillian and Allan.

Evelyn’s formal education started in the Virginia Public School system, later attending Overbrook High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Evelyn loved to read and learn something new. She continued her education by attending and graduating from Apex College of Beauty Culture & Hairdressing.

In July 1947, Evelyn met and fell in love with William Frederick Douglass and this courtship culminated in marriage on December 10th of that same year. This happy union was blessed with one son in 1950.

Evelyn worked as a Presser at Pearls Cleaners in West Philadelphia and then for the Wonder Cleaners in Horsham, PA., until she retired at the age of 77, but she continued as a beautician until eyesight made it difficult to do hairdressing to her own high standards.

Evelyn loved celebrating family gatherings that brought her family together. She enjoyed family vacations with her husband, her son, her sister Nancy, her niece Lee Lee and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A loving wife, devoted mother and loyal friend, Evelyn loved and thanked God for the blessing of a wonderful family and close friends.

On April 23, 2020 Evelyn experienced her transition from this life. She leaves a legacy of love and excellence by example to her son William Frederick Douglass, four grandchildren, Nicole Evelyn, Estherlita Cheryl, and Wadiya Michelle, Walter Andre Smith; seven great-grandchildren, Lateefah, William, Michelle, DeVonte, Sa’Diyya, Imir and Nasir; two great-great grandchildren: Sameer and Samiyah; daughter-in-law Gladys Acevedo-Douglass; sister-in-law Inez Parker; Nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other loving relatives and many special friends.
