Obituary

Charles Edward Lyons, Sr., son of the late Howard L. Lyons, Sr. and Isabelle Lyons entered eternal rest on Sunday, May 7, 2023, at his home in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. Charles, born July 26, 1933 in Philadelphia was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Howard and his sisters Bertha and Edna.

Charles was educated in Philadelphia public schools and graduated from Edward W. Bok Vocational High School where he became an accomplished and talented tailor. In May 1951, Charles married Anna Arbolaez and together they raised a family. A dedicated provider, Charles served for 42 years and retired from an extensive career at the United States Postal Service. Charles married Elaine Jordan in November 1979 and together they raised a family.

Charles was an avid sportsman who enjoyed playing baseball, basketball, bowling and swimming; he shared his athleticism through coaching neighborhood youth. In later years Charles embraced the sport of golf and it became his passion in retirement. A lover of music, especially jazz, Charles enjoyed socializing, playing cards and spending time with friends and family. He was a member of various social clubs and civic associations including The Rotary and Lions Club. As a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church Charles' love for fellowship and leadership converged as he became a founding member of St. John’s Fishers of Men Ministry.

Known as Dad, Poppop, and even sometimes Charlie, Charles leaves a legacy of family, neighbors and friends to cherish the memories of a life well lived. Charles is survived by his brother William, former wives yet lifelong friends Anna and Elaine, son Charles Jr., daughters Michelle (William Randa), Paula (Howard Cupit), Donna (Earle Foster) and Jennifer Rothwell; grandsons Sean, Harry, Earl, Andre, Malcolm and Marcus; granddaughters Yulonda, Mya, Adrienne, Deilia, and Jade; 23 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Grant eternal rest to Charles, O Lord: And let the light of your love shine upon him. May his soul, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
